A Hare was once making fun of the Tortoise for his slow and steady pace. "Do you ever get anywhere?" he asked with a mocking laugh.
"Yes," replied the Tortoise, "and I get there sooner than you think. Run with me to the tall oak tree, and I will prove it."
The Hare was much amused at the thought of running a race with a Tortoise. For the sport of the thing, he gladly accepted the challenge.
The Fox acted as judge and flagged the starting line. The Hare dashed out of sight at once. Feeling quite confident, he decided to lie down in the clover and take a quick nap.
Meanwhile, the Tortoise kept plodding along slowly but steadily. He never stopped for a moment until he crossed the finishing line.
When the Hare awoke from his deep slumber, the Tortoise was already smiling at the finish. Slow and steady wins the race.
